With 82 days remaining until race day, aspiring participants of the 2025 Comrades Marathon have another opportunity to secure their place at the starting line of The Ultimate Human Race, scheduled for Sunday, 8 June 2025.
The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has announced the opening of the substitution process, providing a pathway for runners to enter the event.
How Substitution Works
The substitution window is open from 17 March 2025 to 15 April 2025. During the initial phase, from 17 to 31 March 2025, registered entrants who wish to withdraw can do so through the official process.
These vacated entry slots will then become available on a first-come, first-served basis to new participants from 1 April to 15 April 2025 via the Comrades website.
Notably, withdrawing entrants who are successfully substituted by another runner will receive an 85% refund of their entry fee. It’s important to note that entry fees for substitutes remain consistent with the original rates.
Late substitutions are not permitted, and direct exchanges of money or vouchers between athletes are strictly prohibited.
Additionally, entrants who withdraw through this process cannot reinstate their original entries.
CMA General Manager, Alain Dalais, emphasizes that this substitution process offers athletes who missed the initial entry period another chance to participate in the world’s greatest footrace.
He highlights that this initiative ensures as many runners as possible can experience the iconic Comrades Marathon.
The 98th edition of the Comrades Marathon, marking the 49th Down Run, will commence at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and conclude 12 hours later at Durban’s People’s Park, covering approximately 89 kilometers.
