The Icons Journey Marathon 2025 is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of South Africa’s rich heritage and the enduring spirit of iconic leaders like Nelson Mandela.

This annual event is held in the scenic and historic region of Qunu, in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, where Mandela grew up. Runners of all levels are invited to experience a meaningful journey on foot while connecting with a powerful legacy. Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s edition.

Date: Sunday, 27 July 2025
Location: Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa

The race starts and finishes at the Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha, providing a symbolic and picturesque backdrop for the event.

Distances and Starting Time

The 2025 Icons Journey Marathon will feature the following distances:

  • 35km Physical Run – starts at 07h00
  • 14km Physical Run – starts at 07h30

Each route is designed to showcase the rural beauty and historical significance of the Eastern Cape, offering runners an unforgettable experience.

All entrants will receive a race number and timing chip upon registration..

Online entries will close on 5 July 2025 or once capacity is reached.

Number Collection

Race packs and numbers can be collected at the Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha on the following date:

  • Saturday, 19 July 2025: 10h00 – 17h00

Please bring your proof of payment and ID/confirmation email when collecting your race number.

Starting and Finishing Points

The 35km start From Qunu, Madiba’s home and finish at the Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha. The 14km Distance will Start From Xolilizwe Sangoni High School to Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha town.

The routes pass through undulating rural landscapes, local villages, and heritage-rich areas.

Hydration

Water stations will be positioned every few Kilometres along the route, offering water and energy drinks.

Timing

The race will be timed using a professional chip timing system. Results will be available on the official website shortly after the race ends. Prizes will be awarded based on gun time.

Medals

All finishers will receive a commemorative medal symbolising the Icons Journey. The medal reflects not only completion of the physical challenge but also a connection to the legacy of South African icons.

Prize Giving

The prize-giving ceremony will take place on Sunday, 27 July 2025 at 11h00 at the finish area near the museum. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers in both the 35km and 14km categories.
